The Alcoholic Family by Steinglass
I plan to do a few ‘book reports’. If you are thinking of me as a possible candidate to be your therapist, you may want someone who has absolutely original ideas, someone who reinvents the wheel. As a therapist, a good quality to have is the ability to reinvent the wheel, maybe help reinvent your wheel.
Not the case here.
Steinglass writes eloquently about the Alcoholic Family a quarter century ago. That’s when I read it. I will read it carefully again, so much later, and comment on some of the salient facts he presents.
As I recall, he had takes no one else has bothered with, and many have stuck with me, felt essential. It’s meant for pr0ffessionals, and interpreting will be good for me, therapeutic. This background picture reminds me of people’s memories from childhood, clients’ memories and my own: Faded, still.
So, this ‘Book Report’ will have the nature of a blog. Let’s see how it goes.
Starting the reading July 8, 2026. Expect partial entries for the next 2 months on this one. I guess I should say: No AI here. All me.
